Starter jackets.

If you’re a 1980s baby, you certainly had one of the company’s satin pullovers spilling into your teen years — so did all the Big Leaguers across four major professional sports.

Founded in 1971 by David Beckerman, Starter became one of the first licensees to supply apparel for professional sports franchises eight years later, lending an apparel hand to the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL. By 1983, Starter also outfitted more than 150 colleges and universities.

The brand’s flashy apparel was a favorite for fans and players and became fashion status symbols on gamedays and on the streets. By 1990, Starter saw record sales numbers in the hundred millions, going up against rivals Champion and Russell.

Despite substantial profit loss over the next several years, Starter’s revival came in 1997 when the brand became one of three suppliers for the NBA, outfitting the Charlotte Hornets and New York Knicks. MLB ended its partnership with Starter in 2000 when the league moved to its MLB Authentic Collection with Majestic.

Nike, like it does with most competitors, took over in 2004, purchasing Starter from Official Starter Properties for $43 million. Starter is now exclusively sold at Walmart and has quarterback Tony Romo as its top spokesperson.
