The Iowa State Cyclones play football at Jack Trice Stadium. And for the the Iowa vs Iowa State rivalry game in 2013, they wore these throwback uniforms similar to the 1920s design worn by Jack Trice, the first African-American player in Iowa State history. Trice played two games, and died from injuries suffered against Minnesota in 1923.
The only previous time Iowa State wore throwbacks, Gene Chizik coached the Cyclones to a stunning upset of Iowa, 15-13 in 2007.
The throwback uniforms feature vertical stripes on the front of the jerseys, similar to those worn in the 1920’s. They also have white numerals on the front and gold numerals on the back. The helmets are cardinal colored and include the player’s uniform number in gold. The pants are gold and cardinal-and-gold striped socks.
“The legend of Jack Trice is a critical piece of Iowa State football history,” head coach Paul Rhoads said. “His profound impact on our program resonates with our players today. This is a fitting tribute and our current football team is very excited to wear uniforms from that era.”
