UNIFORM HISTORY

The Ragin’ Cajuns leaped into a new era with updated Russell Athletic uniforms in 2011, sporting appealing combinations that replaced boring threads from previous years. The nicest addition was a black helmet that acts as the perfect accent color for La. Lafayette’s primarily red and white color scheme.

When paired with new black pants featuring a red team graphic-laced stripe, the Ragin Cajuns have one of the Sun Belt’s freshest looks. Currently, La. Lafayette has the option of black, white or red pants on gamedays with red or white jerseys.

The program’s “LOUISIANA” wordmark can be seen across both styles and Russell Athletic helped design the team-specific numerals in a serif font. In the past with Russell Athletic, the Ragin Cajuns’ look was a little simpler with traditional single-striped shoulders and contrasting sleeves.

Numerals have since been added to the tops of shoulders to make it easier on announcers and folks watching from the press box. La. Lafayette’s main color switched from crimson to a red shade (also known as vermilion) in 1980 and the program’s helmets reflected the change.

In September 1999, the University of Southwestern Louisiana officially became the University of Louisiana Lafayette. The Ragin Cajuns have only won nine games in a season twice its first 40 years in existence but has done it in consecutive years with matching bowl wins — including the program’s first — to boot.
