UNIFORM HISTORY

Southern Miss will be getting new football uniforms this fall after announcing a five-year partnership with Russell Athletic. The Golden Eagles, who donned the swoosh last season, were the only winless team in the FBS ranks and are hoping to remove that stain with a new coach and new look.

The program’s 2012 Nike designs were throwbacks modeled after threads worn in 1970. Yellow shells with gray facemasks and a black “USM” decal was the helmet of choice. Those are gone in favor of generic white and black uniforms with gold accents featuring akwakrd piping on shoulders and at the knee. Numerals will now have a crackle effect and jerseys are crew necked with a “SOUTHERN MISS” wordmark instead of forming a V.

Before taking a step back as a program in 2012, Southern Miss wore several different uniform styles and helmets with Nike under head coach Larry Fedora. During the 2011 season alone, the Golden Eagles unveiled three different matte black helmets, each defined by numerical stickers or secondary wordmarks.

During the Nike era, Southern Miss often preferred all black with yellow accents and the school’s primary eagle head logo at the left hip. An all-yellow alternate was also brought out on special occasions as well as a monochrome white get up away from home.

Southern Miss has always embraced its old gold, black and white color scheme on gamedays but the mustard gold has transformed over the years into its current shade of electric yellow.
