Nike’s latest uniform revision in Birmingham after the 2011 season featured a return to basics free of piping, side panels and contrasting vent accents.

Replacing the “UAB” wordmark across the white road and green home jerseys is an all-caps “BLAZERS” that looks a little strange considering the letter spacing spans jersey numerals with room to spare. Green is now the featured color on gamedays as opposed to gold in previous years.

Before the redesign, UAB’s road whites were heavy on gold with side panels and pants. By comparison, UAB’s current road option only as a gold base layer and is trimmed in green. Numerals have been switched to sleeves instead of on the tops of shoulders.

Nike did incorporate gold into the Blazers’ green pants, placing a wide stripe that spans from the knee just below the waist. Monochrome choices are new “it” from an apparel perspective in college football and UAB’s best look is the all-green combination.

A matte green helmet would set off the look, but the Blazers haven’t donned a green lid since 1994 — two years before UAB moved into the Division I-A ranks. UAB’s gold helmets have been worn since 1995. The Blazers switched to their current “UAB” wordmark with a dragon graphic in 2012. Previously, the school’s helmet wordmark was arched.

The Blazers, who have been swoosh-sponsored since 2008, were outfitted by Adidas previously.
